When I was diagnosed with MS, I was devastated.  Soon the fatigue was so debilitating, it was impossible to continue my work as a professor.  I decided to see this as an opportunity to pursue the dream of writing a novel.  So I spent the next three years writing, riding with cops, interviewing criminologists and medical examiners...the research took me to many strange places, including a crack house!

Finally, The Bloodless Stigmata was born.

It's an exciting murder mystery, the story of Sergeant Josephine McGuire and Detective Mike Soigner who are called to investigate the murders of Stephen and
Lizzy Tillman. Pressure to solve the "Suburban Slaughter" mounts steadily from the moment the Tillman children call 911. McGuire and Soigner investigate several promising leads, narrowing it down to two prime suspects.

Meanwhile the detectives' personal dilemmas interfere with the progress of the investigation. Tests reveal that McGuire has Multiple Sclerosis, throwing her from a world of order and justice to one of chaos and uncertainty.  And a stalker's threat toward Soigner's wife forces him to realize he has not escaped the childhood nightmares of being raised by a harsh fundamentalist preacher.

During the course of the novel Soigner and McGuire grapple with the ups and downs of their personal difficulties. Ultimately they both realize triumph over uncertainty occurs only through surrender.

The Bloodless Stigmata grew not only from my dream to write but also from my experience of living with MS.  The story helps readers understand the disease and how it can affect newly diagnosed patients.  It is a powerful tool for those who would like to understand the experience of their friends and family who live with MS.

If you know someone who has been diagnosed with MS, this book will provide an insight into the struggles and feelings of someone coping with the disease.  However, this book stands on its own as a page-turning mystery as well.

Kerry McCarville  (an avid mystery fan who has a friend with Multiple Sclerosis)

Great murder mystery! Loved the story and couldn't put it down. But in addition to being a great read, I really learned a lot about the physical and emotional challenges of being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. A close friend of mine has MS and now I feel like I can better appreciate what she goes through.
