MS Perks!
I know this seems like a weird concept but a client with MS and I started laughing about this one day. There are some things about having MS which can actually be good. It kind of takes a playful attitude. Here are some of my Perks and the Perks of many others living with MS:
•We can blame our mistakes on an “MS Moment”
•We’re forced to focus in on what’s really important
•It’s easier to say no to things we don’t want to do (and often can’t)
•We can let go of some control
•It becomes easier to look at the big picture
•We can have a Handicapped parking space
•We can carry a really cool cane ;)
•We can take naps & watch tv
•We’re freed from the “burden of choice”

•We get early boarding on Southwest Airlines instead of standing in line
•I love the airport thing. I flew this summer and had a wheelchair waiting for me at every arrival
•In many places property taxes are frozen for the disabled
•Social Security Disability and Medicare
•For me it has made me slow down and brush off the little worries.
•You also see that for the most part people are really nice and helpful.
•Husband does the shopping and makes supper when I'm not feeling so good. And doesn't give me gruff about it either!
•I don't have to clean the pool anymore.
•People who know me actually ask before saying WE will go somewhere are do something.
•Strangers SMILE with me when I stagger into them when using my cane.
•When I was upset by an "MS Moment" and unable to find the right words, my dad said, "I don't know what you are worried about, you have MS, we all have CRS - Can't Remember Sh*t!" I love that and it is so true! I'm worried about finding the right word when some around me can't think of it either!
•Also, fatigue is OK, the way I look at it, I may fall asleep hard and sleep deep and long, but hey I'm going to sleep through menopause!
•On the more serious side, I have learned compassion, understanding, and empathy that I never would have otherwise.
•I have found several friends in the real world that I would not even have come in contact with before. You don't have to wait in long lines at Disneyland! They sneak you in through the exit!
•For us guys, if you have to pick an incurable disease, picking the one with two thirds women in it, is the only way to go!
•My handicap parking placard saved me a small fortune in meter fees when I was still working downtown frequently.
•. . . every cloud has a silver lining. ;)
•I have gotten to know lots of wonderful doctors & other health care personnel I would never have met. My family has bonded at a whole new level that is wonderful. And I love the famous quote when I do something dumb "You know I have MS" LOL
“What You’re Putting Up With is Holding You Back
5 Steps to the Freedom You’re Waiting For!”
John Lennon said,
